The Newton Fund is part of the UK’s official development assistance programme. The fund is £75 million each year from 2014 for five years.

Through the Newton Fund, the UK will use its strength in research and innovation to promote economic development and social welfare of partner countries.

By working together on research and innovation projects, the UK will build strong and sustainable relationships with partner countries. This will support the continued excellence of UK research and innovation to unlock opportunities for wider collaboration and trade.

Venue and dates

The workshop will take place at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey,

9th - 13th February, 2015

Description of the workshop

This workshop will focus on the link between educational dialogue and transformative learning in the teaching of STEM subjects in school education. The aim is to build research capacity and expertise in the study of educational dialogue and its relationship with transformative learning with a view to improving the quality of education in these particular subject areas. The workshop will bring together early career researchers from Mexico and the UK and will build a sustainable research collaborations network which will support the development of knowledge in the conceptual areas of educational dialogue and transformative learning.

There has been considerable research work developed separately in educational dialogue and in transformative learning, but these two areas have not been brought together in the context of the study of STEM subjects in basic education. The construction of the international research network during and after the workshop will enable new fields of research to be created. Each country context represents a unique environment which provides insight into particular expertise and knowledge that will constitute a research understanding of the concepts of educational dialogue and transformative learning. The workshop will have a dual focus on the theoretical themes but also on the sharing and development of methodological perspectives and this will enable the early career researchers to develop both their conceptual frames and their understandings of a broader range of methodologies.

The workshop will also have a particular focus on including early career researchers from the Mexican indigenous universities affiliated to the 'Red de Universidades Interculturales' (Network of Intercultural Universities) in Mexico, as a means of addressing issues of international development and supporting the development of less privileged groups in Mexican society.

Participation and mentoring

The workshop will be interdisciplinary with participants sharing an interest in the development of innovative practices for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, English [Language], and Mathematics) in basic education. Researchers with interests in interculturality and the ethics of interaction in the context of classroom dialogue will also be welcomed.

This workshop will have the participation of 5 senior scholars in the role of mentors, all of them experts in the field of dialogue and STEM subjects in basic education in Mexico and the UK.

Mentors (alphabetical order):

Dr. Manuel Flores Fahara, Tecnológico de Monterrey - click for CV
Dr. Sara Hennessy, University of Cambridge - click for CV
Dr. Rebeca Mejía Arauz, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO)- click for CV
Dr. Guadalupe Rodríguez Bulnes, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León - click for CV
Prof. Rupert Wegerif, University of Exeter - click for CV

Dr. Montgomery (click for CV) and Dr. Fernández-Cárdenas (click for CV), coordinators of the workshop, will also act as mentors of participants.

Mentors will help 30 early career researchers (15 from Mexico and 15 from the UK) to advance their understanding on how to carry out research and design innovative practices for promoting dialogue and transformative learning in STEM subjects in basic education.

Mentors, coordinators and the peer group will provide a supportive environment within which to publish in high quality contexts and it is intended this will include a special issue of a journal and an edited collection of papers in a book.

Travel, accommodation, and meals during the days of the workshop will be covered by the funding of the British Council.

Early Career Researchers are defined as holding a PhD (or having equivalent research experience) and having up to 10 years post-PhD research experience.
